What are Micellar Waters & Why Are They So Good At Removing Dirt & Makeup?

Being a girl that never really got on with tonic waters, I never really looked at these micellar waters with much interest. I saw that they were gaining popularity very fast and almost every beauty store I went into I saw them everywhere in different colours, brands and bottle sizes. One thing that did stick out to me on several occasions was the fact that one my favourite drugstore brands is Garnier and if there is one thing I can say about Garnier is the fact that their products are so gentle on my skin. Knowing this, I took the plunge and purchased the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water for sensitive skin.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SURFACTANTS

The scientific idea behind micellar cleansers is very interesting because it is all about surfactants. Surfactants are molecules with two ends, one end is hydrophilic (water-loving) and the other end is lipophilic (oil-loving). The ability for these molecules to have to polar- opposite ends means they are great attracting almost anything that sits on the skin. If you think about it, oil and water don't mix (normally) so to have these molecules with both properties is so useful.

When these surfactants come together they form micelles and have a strong attracting to oily and watery components that come close to it. The ability of these surfactants to able to attract oil, dirt, makeup on your skin and thats what makes it an effective cleanser.

WHAT ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW!

There are also bi-phase micellar cleansers, which have an oily phase and a water phase. These are proven to work better on makeup removal as most makeup are oil soluble. I have tried out both the L'Oreal and the Garnier Bi-phase micellar waters and they are great! I'll do a full review soon.

In addition to Garnier, there are also many different brands that have micellar cleansing waters such as L'Oreal, Bioderma and these all great if you want to try them out.

Hope this breaks down the science behind micellar waters and why they have been a popular choice cleansing water! Have you tried any micellar cleansing waters I would love to know what you think!

Thanks so much for reading and I'll see you in my next post! Love J x
